Din cand in cand, cu totii simtim mahnire sau ne intristam impreuna cu cei suferinzi, sustinandu-i intr-un moment dificil.

Insa o facem intr-un mod foarte diferit.

Pentru unii oameni, empatia pare fireasca precum respiratia insasi.

Ei nu intampina dificultati grave in comunicarea cu omul care sufera, pe cand altii sunt nevoiti sa depuna eforturi considerabile in acest sens. Totusi, oricat de complexe si contradictorii sunt optiunile pentru astfel de relatii, omul ramane aceeasi fiinta suferinda si plina de compasiune, fiind ranita de mila.

Aceasta constituie masura umanitatii noastre, minimul ei necesar.

Daca omul coboara mai jos de aceasta treapta, inceteaza pur si simplu sa mai fie om.

Prin urmare, pentru fiecare dintre noi exista nevoia stringenta de dobandire a unei abilitati, pe care, din pacate, nu o are nici pe departe toata lumea.

Este vorba despre capacitatea de a compatimi, fara a te prabusi din pricina durerii celuilalt si fara a le provoca o suferinta si mai mare altora prin mila ta.

Inainte de a initia o conversatie despre aceasta calitate, ar fi necesar sa abordam un subiect la fel de important: granitele personale. Respectarea granitelor personale ale altei persoane reprezinta o conditie necesara a iubirii, in sensul ei crestin.
