Prin Serotonina Michel Houellebecq demonstreaza inca o data ca este cronicarul nemilos al declinului societatii occidentale din secolul XXI, un scriitor neimblanzit, dar romantic, incomod, dar indispensabil.
Protagonistul romanului Serotonina, Florent-Claude Labrouste, un barbat de 46 de ani, a ajuns intr-un punct critic al existentei personale.
Se indoapa cu Captorix, un antidepresiv de ultima generatie, incercand o supravietuire decenta.
Medicamentul creste nivelul de serotonina din organism dar are trei efecte secundare: greata, disparitia libidoului si impotenta.
Florent-Claude alege de bunavoie sa renunte la profesie, la viata sociala, la cunostinte. Isi sterge urmele, se refugiaza in hoteluri – unde musai trebuie sa existe camere pentru fumatori –, straduindu-se sa opereze o regresie paliativa in trecutul personal.
Naratiunea sa traverseaza o Franta care isi nesocoteste traditiile, isi trivializeaza orasele si isi distruge satele aflate in pragul revoltei. Dezradacinat si autodistructiv, eroul lui Houellebecq isi scruteaza propria viata si lumea din jurul lui cu un umor aspru si cu o virulenta sfasietoare.
 

Roman al unei rataciri fara speranta pe drumurile din nordul Frantei, al dezabuzarii si nostalgiei convulsive fata de niste iubiri ratate , dar si al privirii lucide si necrutatoare asupra lumii contemporane, cu razvratiti intratabili si „veste galbene“ sui generis, Serotonina este cu siguranta una dintre cele mai puternice, tandre si vitriolante carti scrise de Michel Houellebecq.

Intunecata si miraculoasa, comica si melancolica, Serotonina este fara indoiala cea mai frumoasa carte a lui Michel Houellebecq. Scris intr-un stil mai modern ca niciodata, suplu, precis si viu, acest roman nu-si va lasa nepasatori, nici acum, cititorii. Povestea iubirii imposibile dintre  Florent-Claude si Camille ofera unele dintre cele mai sfasietoare pasaje ale cartii. Si nu vom mai avea prea des ocazia sa citim un Michel Houellebecq atat de sentimental, de sincer, de lucid si de uman. – Vanity Fair
