Caderea regimului ceausist in 1989 a lasat in intreaga Romanie aproximativ 170.000 de copii in 700 de orfelinate supraaglomerate, pauperizate si cu personal insuficient. Acesta este contextul in care o echipa americana de specialisti in sanatate mentala a demarat cel mai complex studiu modern despre efectele institutionalizarii asupra starii de bine a copiilor.

Cartea “Copiii abandonati ai Romaniei”, o descriere fidela a acestei cercetari, ilustreaza si eforturi de recuperare pretul devastator platit de copiii lipsiti de ingrijire empatica, de interactiune sociala, de stimulare si de siguranta.

Demarat in 2000, Proiectul de Interventie Timpurie “Bucuresti” a reprezentat o analiza riguros controlata a plasamentului familial ca alternativa a institutionalizarii. In studiul lor desfasurat pe parcursul a 12 ani, cercetatorii americani au inclus 136 de copii orfani cu varsta de cel mult trei ani si i-au distribuit aleatoriu pe jumatate dintre ei in familii sociale, cealalta jumatate ramanand in institutiile de ocrotire. Pe langa faptul ca s-au dovedit a avea un IQ mult redus, copiii institutionalizati au prezentat o gama variata de tulburari sociale si emotionale, precum si modificari in dezvoltarea cerebrala. In schimb, in ceea ce-i priveste pe copiii ajunsi in familii sociale, cu cat acestia au fost plasati mai devreme, cu atat mai bine s-au recuperat.

Cartea “Copiii abandonati ai Romaniei”, de Charles A. Nelson, Nathan A. Fox si Charles H. Zeanah, reprezinta atat o contributie stiintifica remarcabila in domeniul psihologiei si neurostiintei dezvoltarii, cat si un indemn energic la adresa autoritatilor autohtone (si de pretutindeni) in a imbunatati soarta copiilor institutionalizati.

Charles A. Nelson este profesor de pediatrie si neurostiinte la Harvard Medical School, SUA.

Nathan A. Fox este directorul Laboratorului de Dezvoltare a Copilului de la Universitatea din Maryland, SUA.

Charles H. Zeanah este profesor de psihiatrie a copilului si adolescentului la Universitatea Tulane, SUA.
