Combatantul fortelor civile de tineret Deev primeste misiunea de a forma un tren care sa transporte cinci sute de copii de la Kazan pana in Samarkandul mai indestulat.

Astfel incepe o calatorie aventuroasa, de sase saptamani, din padurile de pe malul Volgai si stepele kazahe pana in desertul Kizilkum si muntii Turkestanului, desfasurand o panza fabuloasa, pe care sunt zugravite destine, personaje pline de culoare (cazaci albi, tarani porniti in bejenie, cekisti, basmaci si, mai ales, micii vagabonzi excentrici), iubiri, gesturi exaltate sau suferinte tacute, umor, cruzime si speranta – intr-o alternare de lumina si intuneric demna de marea pictura si acea vivacitate cinematografica a scenelor cu care ne-a obisnuit deja Guzel Iahina.
