Numele Borgia este sinonim cu nepotismul, coruptia si lacomia, fenomene atat de raspandite in Italia in epoca Renasterii.

Cunoscuti pentru faptul ca acumulau putere, avutii, teritorii si titluri prin mituire, casatorie si crima, membrii dinastiei cu radacini spaniole au ajuns sa ocupe cele mai inalte pozitii in societatea italiana a secolelor al XV-lea si al XVI-lea.

Figura centrala a acestei familii o reprezinta puternicul si avidul Rodrigo Borgia (1431-1503), devenit papa sub numele de Alexandru al VI-lea in 1492, anul in care Cristofor Columb a ajuns in America, maurii au predat Granada in mainile spaniolilor, iar Lorenzo Magnificul a murit la Florenta. Descendent al unei influente familii aragoneze, acesta s-a implicat din tinerete in politica de la Roma, servind in Curie in timpul pontificatului unchiului sau Calixt al III-lea (1378–1458) si sub patru succesori ai acestuia.

Doua dintre cele sapte odrasle ale sale au cunoscut la randul lor puterea si faima: Cesare (1475–1507), duce de Valentinois, care i-a servit drept model lui Niccolo Machiavelli in scrierea faimoasei sale lucrari intitulate Principele, si Lucrezia (1480–1519), ducesa de Ferrara, Modena si Reggio, care, ajutata de Cesare, si-a ucis propriul sot.

Cu eruditie, iscusinta si intuitie, Christopher Hibbert destrama valul legendei care s-a tesut in jurul familiei Borgia, realizand un portret plin de drama si de verva.
