Pentru ca, intr-adevar, abordarea compasiunii in relatia cu propriul sine, cu cei din jur si in fiecare domeniu al vietii cotidiene cere un efort sustinut de constientizare si o practica asidua, care impreuna duc la o transformare profunda a persoanei. Orice schimbare incepe cu mintea, intr-un sens cat se poate de concret, pe care Gilbert il explica prin recurs la cercetari recente, de factura evolutionista, din neurostiinte si psihanaliza: avem un creier “vechi”, spune el, proiectat in scopul supravietuirii, care intra adesea in conflict cu creierul “nou”, de origine mai recenta in cazul speciei umane evoluate, capabil de operatii mai complexe si mai subtile. Printre consecintele acestui conflict se numara furia, anxietatea si depresia care, neconstientizate si gestionate necorespunzator, pot intoxica intregul tesut de relatii interumane ale unei persoane, si asa pus la incercare de presiunile vietii contemporane si ale societatii axate pe performanta si consum. Paul Gilbert ne demonstreaza cu eruditie, blandete si umor ca o cunoastere aprofundata a acestor mecanisme si un exercitiu constant ne pot ajuta sa confruntam zonele cele mai intunecate ale propriilor minti.
