Aflam astfel de ce, de multe ori, virtutea nu isi este propria rasplata, de ce extrovertitii sunt de fapt mai fericiti decat introvertitii si de ce gandirea constienta nu e atat de importanta cum ne-ar placea sa credem. Inspirandu-se atat din filozofie, cat si din stiinta, Ipoteza fericirii ne arata cum am putea deveni mai buni, mai echilibrati si mai fericiti.
Fericirea nu e ceva ce putem gasi, obtine sau atinge in mod direct. Trebuie sa ne asiguram conditiile potrivite si apoi sa asteptam. Unele dintre acele conditii tin de noi insine, precum coerenta din­tre partile si nivelurile personalitatii noastre. Alte conditii presupun o relatie cu lucruri care se afla in afara noastra: asa cum plantele au nevoie de soare, de apa si de pamant fertil pentru a creste, oamenii au nevoie de iubire, de munca si de o legatura cu ceva mai mare decat ei insisi. Merita sa luptam pentru a dezvolta relatiile potrivite dintre noi si ceilalti, dintre noi si munca pe care o facem si dintre noi si ceva mai mare decat persoana noastra. Daca reusim sa cream aceste relatii, scopul si sensul vor incepe sa se faca simtite. – Jonathan Haidt
