Nazistii propovaduiau puritatea fizica si morala, dar, asa cum dezvaluie Norman Ohler in lucrarea sa riguros documentata, cel de-al Treilea Reich era suprasaturat de droguri.
Inainte de inceperea celui de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial, Germania era o mare putere in domeniul farmaceutic, iar companii precum Merck, Bayer sau Temmler purificau sau produceau si vindeau in cantitati industriale cocaina, opioide si, mai presus de toate, metamfetamina.
Acest din urma drog ajunsese sa fie consumat de toata lumea, de la muncitori si gospodine pana la medici si militari.
De fapt, soldatii primeau in mod regulat ratii de metamfetamina, caci substanta psihotropa le sporea energia si capacitatea de concentrare, le alunga spaimele si ii facea sa se simta invincibili, autorul sustinand ca, fara ea, Blitzkrieg-ul nu ar fi avut succes.
Si, cu toate ca narcoticele singure nu pot fi o explicatie suficienta pentru teoriile rasiale toxice ale nazistilor sau pentru deslusirea tuturor evenimentelor razboiului, incredibila cercetare a lui Ohler demonstreaza ca, fara a lua in considerare consumul de droguri, nu vom intelege niciodata pe deplin istoria celui de-al Treilea Reich.
